Ihab Anwar - Trip to Canada

Ihab Anwar was not much of a traveler growing up. The native of the United Kingdom had never left his home country until he was old enough to go on a semester at sea trip for college. That was when his life was ultimately changed for the better. He now had a thirst for exploration that he had yet to fulfill; and it all started with a trip that put him on 15 different countries in a matter of 108 days, setting a pace that he now had to adopt and become more comfortable with.

Ihab Anwar - Trip to Canada

When the ship first set sail from the UK, Ihab Anwar and his friends got to experience more of their part of the world before crossing the Atlantic. They got to experience, France, Spain and Morocco for a few weeks before making it over to the Americas. But once they landed on the North American continent, they went to learn some new things about the continent’s northernmost population after seeing what life is like in Florida, America’s southernmost state. They explored Canada for two weeks getting to see all the top sights in Quebec, Nova Scotia and Ontario. They went to Niagara Falls, they went hiking in Nova Scotia and they explored the metropolises of Montreal and Toronto. They also got to see a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game, which was the first live NHL experience that Dr. Ihab Anwar, and many other people on the trip, ever had.

Ihab Anwar learned much from his trip to Canada, and he would like to go back and see the western parts one day.

Ihab Anwar: Journaling Adventure

The Fall 2014 academic semester was one that Ihab Anwar won’t soon forget, as it provided him the chance to explore the world, Europe and parts of the Bahamas in ways he won’t soon forget. As an eager young participant in a highly-acclaimed Semester at Sea program, Anwar enjoyed exposure to some of the most historic ports, cities and cultures that line the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as to connect with other aspiring scholars who shared his enthusiasm for learning and for adventure.

The Semester at Sea voyage, which lasted nearly three total months, brought students like Ihab Anwar face-to-face with the cities and destinations that have been so instrumental to the development and direction of human history, particularly during the last 500-600 years. Anwar, along with his fellow shipmates, were honored to have been considered for this wonderful hands-on experience, something that will surely resound in their hearts and minds for many years to come.

Ihab Anwar UK

Ihab Anwar, like many of his student colleagues, documented his travels in his private journal, one he will now use to generate a paper on the subject in the very near future. His plan, however, is not just to use his writing to produce something academic, but to perhaps even create a short novel detailing his experience, and to do so quickly, while the memories still freshly reside in his mind.

Ihab Anwar UK

Perhaps even more motivation to write on his experiences is Jenna, a beautiful young student who caught Anwar’s eye very early in the trip. Jenna, who shares Anwar’s love of travel and experience, quickly became the most memorable part of his journey, adding an element of romance to what was an already transcendental experience.

Ihab Anwar: A Renewed Interest in Travel

Ihab Anwar traveled quite extensively as a child, following his parents to various destinations around the globe as he lost himself in the many wonders, cultures, sights and smells the world had to offer. The travel bug, so to speak, took Anwar by force, though his passion for traveling began to waver as he became more and more immersed in the adventures of childhood, and academic study, in his hometown of Manchester, England.

Ihab Anwar - Travel the World

The passion for international travel Ihab Anwar enjoyed as a child has been renewed, thanks to the incredible experiences he attained as a student in the Semester at Sea program. Between September and December of 2014, Ihab Anwar, along with over 700 young scholars from around the globe, enjoyed the opportunity to embark on an incredible, hands-on educational adventure, one that exposed each student to many of the wonders, cultures, beauty and variety the world has to offer.

Ihab Anwar, who was nearly overwhelmed by the 108 day adventure, experienced something transcendental, almost profound, as a Semester at Sea student. Anwar, who is currently studying marine biology at the University of Rhode Island, continues to rave about the experiences he had both on and off the MV Explorer, which served as the students’ transport for the entire three plus months.

Ihab Anwar: Adventures aboard the MV Explorer

The 2014 Semester at Sea program is an experience Ihab Anwar will look back fondly on for the rest of his life. A three month educational voyage to ports, cities and countries adoring the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, respectively, the Semester at Sea adventure exposed Anwar and his classmates to a myriad of sights, cultures and peoples that helped to forever alter their perspective of the world, as well as what it really means to become an active global citizen.

The MV Explorer, a ten-year-old mid-sized cruising vessel, toted both Ihab Anwar and his fellow scholars to ports throughout Europe, Russia and even islands in the Bahamas, exposing each to a wondrous variety of scenic, architectural and historic opportunities rarely found within a classroom setting. Tour Director and History Professor Camron Lodge walked his students through 17 port cities within 15 cities, including the historic St. Petersburg, Russia.

Ihab Anwar UK

“What an incredible place to be!” exclaimed Ihab Anwar in his journal. “So much color and history in such a vibrant and bustling city!  Mr. Lodge walked us past an almost endless array of grandiose palaces and churches…it was almost too much to handle for such a short stay!”

St. Petersburg was just one of many stops along the way, as Anwar and his group were led through critical port cities in Poland, France, Portugal and even the Bahamas. The voyage, which officially ended in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in December of last year, provided students a unique, eye-opening and even profoundly impactful experience; one that will surely influence and impact who they are for many years to come.

Ihab Anwar: A Short History of Gdansk, Poland

Amongst the many places visited by Ihab Anwar during the Fall 2014 Semester at Sea opportunity was Gdansk, Poland, the birthplace of Poland’s solidarity movement, a revolutionary worker’s union created in the early to mid-1980s. One of the first stops on the Semester at Sea tour, Gdansk offered both Anwar and his fellow students a glimpse into a city, and region, which has struggled with much strife and upheaval throughout the 20th century.

Ihab Anwar UK

A studious note-taker, Ihab Anwar paid close attention to lectures Tour Director ‘Mr. Lodge’ delivered during the group’s short journey through Gandsk, which provided everyone involved the opportunity to experience city, and people, admired for their resilience and resistance over the last 100 years. Gdansk, as was explained to the group, was once dominated by the Hanseatics and Prussians, who controlled what was one of the most important and strategic ports in the Baltic region. Once known as Danzig, Gdansk was nearly completely destroyed by bombing raids near the end of WWII. Though the city has since been rebuilt, remnants of the war continue to be visible throughout much of the surrounding region.

Ihab Anwar

Ihab Anwar and his ‘shipmates’ were guided through Gdasnsk’s historical quarter during their brief visit, which, to Anwar at least, was like “walking back through time.” They were then lead to one of the city’s medieval merchant settlements, which, as Mr. Lodge put it, “serves as a powerful reminder of the just how powerful both the city, and the region, were in terms of Eastern European trade throughout much of the last thousand years.

Dr. Ihab Anwar - Contributions to Medical Zeitgeist

Dr. Ihab Anwar is a skilled laparoscopic surgeon working at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is the author or co-author of a multitude of research papers concerning various surgical practices and techniques. He has extensive training in breast reconstruction surgery and breast disease, including breast cancer.

In March 2011, he and a few other prominent researchers completed a study called “Management Guidelines for Breast Cancer,” published by the King Faisal Specialist Hospital. The paper is a groundbreaking study of the detailed stages of breast cancer in the body using new knowledge.

Ihab Anwar

The paper focuses in part on tumor staging systems and how they provide surgeons and doctors with information on the extent of the cancer and how this information can be used to dictate treatment and help doctors develop a useful prognosis. Ihab Anwar writes in the paper that tumor staging systems also provides a useful framework for reporting treatment outcomes and permits the evaluation of the effectiveness of new treatment.

Dr. Ihab Anwar uses this breast cancer staging system to classify cancers based on T, N, and M stages. Dr. Anwar uses the letter T and a number between 0 and 4 to identify the size of a tumor and to what extent it has spread to the skin or the chest wall. High T numbers denote a larger, more dangerous tumor.

Dr. Ihab Anwar hopes that his research can curb the devastating effects of breast cancer worldwide. In 2012, 1.7 million new breast cancer cases were diagnosed.

Ihab Anwar : A Tour of Lisbon

One of the most memorable and perhaps even most profound experiences of young Ihab Anwar’s life was the opportunity to participate in his school’s Semester at Sea program; a semester long cruise that provided both Ihab Anwar and his fellow students the opportunity to explore, learn and experience a variety of places, cultures and peoples throughout Europe and the Caribbean. The study abroad program, which is managed by the Institute for Shipboard Education, continues to provide students a wonderful opportunity to learn about the world in ways just not possible in a classroom setting.

Ihab Anwar - Tour of Lisbon

Ihab Anwar, along with hundreds of other aspiring academics, shared in the Fall 2014 Semester at Sea experience, which included stops at 17 total ports located in 15 different countries. Each port, as part of a major internationally-known city, offered students a wonderful opportunity to gain perspective on a new place, a new set of customs and architecture and scenic beauty only available in each unique destination.

One of the best stops, at least according to Dr. Ihab Anwar, was the port of Lisbon, Portugal, a vast cultural hub that has earned international fame, and acclaim, for its incredible array of historic cathedrals, castles and breathtaking layout. Mr. Lodge, the cruise Director, filled the students in on Lisbon’s unique history over the last millennium, including a 17th century earthquake that almost completely destroyed the city for good.

Anwar and his fellow travelers, eager for adventure, were split into small groups and given the opportunity to explore the several unique sections of the city, including some of the many quaint cafes and charming inns Lisbon is famous for.

Dr. Ihab Anwar – Focus on Laparoscopic Surgery

Dr. Ihab Anwar has devoted his career to becoming the best surgeon he can. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in the United States. He has focused primarily, in his later career, on laparoscopic surgery, and gained membership in the International Society of Surgeons, and in the Asian Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Ihab Anwar

Laparoscopic surgery is a term used for minimally invasive surgery and involves surgical techniques that do not cause as much trauma for patients on the operating table as traditional open surgery. Dr. Ihab Anwar first trained and gained experience in laparoscopic surgery during a basic laparoscopic surgery course in Goettingen, Germany and another laparoscopic surgery course at Security Forces Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Surgeon Ihab Anwar says that during his time at Security Forces Hospital, he performed more than 1,300 Laparoscopic Chloecystectomies, or gall bladder removal, on top of general surgery practice.
Ihab Anwar - Surgeon

Laparoscopic surgery involves unorthodox surgical procedures using video cameras and specialized surgical implements. Usually, the surgeon makes small incisions in the patient’s body through which small plastic tubes are placed. The video camera and the surgical instruments are then fed through these small incisions and tubes, giving the surgeon a direct and real-time view of the patient from the inside.

Dr. Ihab Anwar – Focus on Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgeons, including Dr. Ihab Anwar then uses the video images from the cameras to perform the surgery with extremely precise robotic instruments that he controls remotely. After surgery, the patient usually needs less time to recover at the hospital, less overall discomfort—leading to less painkilling medication and risk for addiction, and less scarring.

Ihab Anwar - A Night in Barbados

Ihab Anwar is a college student at the University of Rhode Island. He spent the entire Fall 2014 semester on board a cruise ship called the MV Explorer, as part of the Semester at Sea program.

The Semester at Sea program takes hundreds of lucky students on an around-the-world voyage intended to expose them to the complexities of the world, and prepare them for leadership roles and to be informed global citizens. The voyage lasted for 108 and visited seventeen cities in fifteen different countries.

Ihab Anwar kept a detailed diary during the trip, and is planning to use it as the basis for a paper he is obliged to write for school. The longest entries in the diary were made on his impressions of the various cities and countries he saw, such as his detailed entry about the Port of Bridgetown in Barbados, where the MV Explorer docked on November 22nd.

“A lot of Brits here,” he noted in the entry. “Barbados, or B’dos as they call it here, was a British territory up until 1966, and the UK influence is still very strong. It is the easternmost of the Caribbean island. Mr. Lodge says that vacationing Brits make up the largest number of visitors to the island every year.” Mr. Lodge is the Semester at Sea Tour Director assigned to the MV Explorer.

“The locals, who Mr. Lodge says are called Bajuns, are very friendly people,” Ihab Anwar wrote. “There is almost no crime here, and me and the other kids felt safe venturing out on our own. That is a violation of the rules, but got away with it. Jenna and I took a long walk on the beach in the afternoon, and she let me hold her hand.” Jenna is an American student he met on the MV Explorer and developed a crush on.

Ihab Anwar: Trans-Atlantic Film

Ihab Anwar says he was incredibly lucky to get involved in the Semester at Sea program through the University of Rhode Island, where he is a student for the 2014-2015 school year. "I live in England, go to school in Rhode Island, but spent the entire Fall semester travelling the world," he said. "How lucky is that?"

The Semester at Sea program takes hundreds of college students on an around-the-world trip, with stops scheduled at numerous countries along the way. The Fall 2014 trip set sail from Southampton, England on August 24 and visited seventeen cities in fifteen countries during its 108-day voyage.

Anwar says he learned a lot and saw parts of the world that he never expected to see. But in addition to the travel, he and the other students had to take a lot of required courses, and some electives, too.

One of the classes he took was called Trans-Atlantic Film as History. "According to the course outline, it was supposed to introduce us to the idea that movies can bear witness to the diversity of the human experience. That's what the instructor kept saying, although she always said cinema – ‘Cinema can bear witness to the diversity of the human experience.'"

The course, he went on, had a short section on the development of film technology in the late 1800s and early 1900s. "But the emphasis was on the social issues that were introduced in each movie."

Films that were screened for the students included The Butterfly, which was about the Spanish Civil War, and A Night of Truth, which was about inter-African warfare. Ihab Anwar said that he had never hear of any of the movies that they saw.

Ihab Anwar - The World Was His Classroom

Dr. Ihab Anwar recently completed what he is calling the most amazing experience of his life. He was a passenger on board the MV Explorer, which sailed around the world as part of the Semester at Sea program. He and hundreds of other students set sail from England on August 24, 2014, embarking on a voyage that lasted for 108 days and took them to fifteen different countries.

Ihab Anwar - World Was His Classroom"The world was our classroom," Ihab Anwar said shortly after he got back to the campus of the University of Rhode Island, where he is a student studying marine biology and journalism. He says that he is thinking about switching majors to political science.

The purpose of the Semester at Sea program, according to Ihab Anwar, is to expose students to a multi-cultural experience while preparing them for leadership roles. "I thought I was a pretty sophisticated guy before this," he says. "I grew up in England with Saudi roots. I have an uncle in Houston, Texas, and I go to school in Rhode Island."

Ihab Anwar : The Most Amazing Experience

Ihab Anwar is a student at the University of Rhode Island, and says that the Fall 2014 semester was the most amazing experience of his entire life.

He did not spent much time at the University of Rhode Island during that fall term. Instead, he was on board the MV Explorer as a participant in the Semester at Sea program. The program, established in 1963, takes up to 720 students on an around-the-world voyage, during which they make multiple stops in numerous countries, and study the history and culture of each port of call.

This year's Semester at Sea set sail from Southampton, England and visited fifteen different countries over its 108 day journey. "It is indescribable," says Ihab Anwar shortly after he returned to the campus at Rhode Island in early December. "It was like nothing I've ever experienced before. I wouldn't even know where to begin to describe it – there was just so much – but I'm going to write about it for the school paper." He is a marine biology major who is thinking of switching to political science. He is also studying journalism.

He says that some of the most interesting ports of call were in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Bridgetown, Barbados, and Havana, Cuba. "I had never been in that part of the world before," he says. But he quickly added, "I guess I'd never been to most of those other places, either, except for England and France."

The Semester at Sea program, says Ihab Anwar, is meant to integrate interdisciplinary coursework, hands-on learning, and a multi-cultural experience for its students. The MV Explorer, which has been called one of the safest ships afloat, is one of the fastest passenger ships of its kind.
